Pitching the Path – Helvellyn

Catstye Cam from Helvellyn
Volunteering Helvellyn and Ennerdale
The landscape conservation charity Friends of the Lake District’s Flora of the Fells is organising the “Fell Care Day” at Helvellyn on Thursday, 29th September, to highlight the huge role that volunteering plays in conserving and managing the fells. It expects more than 25 organisations, including schools, and 100 volunteers to take part.
The charity is also running a second Fell Care Day in Ennerdale on Tuesday, 18th October.
The theme for the Helvellyn Fell Care Day is land management for water quality and woods. The day will also celebrate 2011 as the European Year of Volunteering, International Year of Forests and the 60th Birthday of the Lake District National Park. That’s a lot to celebrate!
Volunteers could be surveying red squirrels, working on footpath repair work, repairing sheepfolds, tree conservation work, litter picks on Swirral Edge and Striding Edge, and on the lakeshore. Local schools will be taking part and making squirrel feeders, alongside other educational conservation work.
Any individuals, groups or businesses interested in volunteering on either day should contact Sue Manson, at sue-manson@fld.org.uk or phone 01539 733187
