Saul, manager of the Rohan shop in Harrogate would like to thank everybody who came to the evening and made it such a success,
“One of the best parts of my job is that I get to hear a lot of really interesting stories from all of our customers about where they have been, where they are going next and what inspires them. I hope that most people went away a little more inspired.”
Sam was really pleased with the turnout and maybe we will do something further in the future. In the meantime come and see the exhibition of the African photos in Rohan Harrogate until the end of the month.
Rohan Harrogate Hosts Sam Oakes A Taste of Africa – 9th September
Rohan Harrogate hosts a Harrogate-born travel photographer whose work has been published worldwide to give a talk about his adventures in East Africa and officially launch his debut photography book next month.
Guests can enjoy a visual presentation and hear Sam talk about his recent adventures in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, followed by Q&As and an opportunity to view and purchase his most recent work.
This includes his debut publication, East Africa: a journey through Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, which keenly captures the wildlife, landscapes and people of a part of a world which could not be more different from Sam Oakes’ home town in North Yorkshire.
Published by Blurb, the book’s 140 full-colour photographs demonstrate Sam’s artistic eye and take the reader on a unique journey of African discovery.
Sam Oakes said: “I am delighted to branch into publishing and be able to show my photographs in a different way. Documenting East Africa through my first book, which only admittedly touches the surface of such an extraordinary part of the world, and sharing it with others is a fantastic experience.”
In addition to his well-established business of fine art prints and editorial photography, Sam has also just launched his first calendar of African wildlife for 2011, plus a range of travel photography greetings cards. Sam’s work has received a glowing endorsement by travel legend and actor Michael Palin, who said: “Great work, keep on doing what you’re doing!”
The evening will start at 6pm and finish at 8.30pm, with Sam’s talk beginning at 7pm. Complimentary drinks and authentic African snacks will also be available.
Sam said: “I look forward to how people will respond to my experience, as well as the prints, book and cards. It will offer a timely opportunity to speak directly to other travel fans ahead of my next projects, the first of which will be taking me to the Caribbean islands of Martinique, Dominica and St Lucius at the end of the year.”
In 2004, Sam decided to swap his career as a graphic designer for his life-long passion, photography, and didn’t let what could ultimately be a gamble hold him back. With the overall objective of returning with a body of work with which to hold an exhibition and kick-start his new vocation, Sam set out on a journey which would take him through nine countries, including China, Laos, Thailand and Australia, documenting all that he saw.
Since his return, he has travelled even more widely and held a series of photography exhibitions in Harrogate and Leeds, and been showcased in 55max, a London gallery, including a spell in Harrods, Knightsbridge. His editorial images have been published across the world, with highlights including the cover of Glimpse, a US affiliate magazine of National Geographic, and BBC Gardens Illustrated.
A Taste of Africa’ will also give customers a one-night-only 15% discount off all Rohan clothing, plus a sneak preview of the new autumn range.
Sounds like a good night out…
