The Secret Diaries of a Long-distance Walker

David Maughan - The Secret Diaries of a Long-distance Walker

I have just returned from a very enjoyable cruise to Norway and Spitsbergen (Svalbard).

During the cruise from the period 9th to the 23rd July from Newcastle to Spitsbergen (Svalbard), the latter at over 78 degrees north, I attempted my first ever long-distance walk on a cruise. I walked over 36 miles around the deck, which is some 144 laps of the ship. I am not sure whether anyone has ever specifically set out to do the same so it could be a first? It certainly was for me.

It was my 48th long-distance walk, all the others being land based, including coast to coast three times!

I have shared some pictures of the stunning views from the ship. They include dramatic glaciers, beautiful mountain ranges, awesome waterfalls, birds, passing the Arctic Circle globe, stunning sunsets and the midnight sun. I was sometimes on deck between 2 to 5 am taking photographs! These in summer above the Arctic Circle are the golden hours for photography.

As the deck is wooden it is much easier than walking on tarmac. It is always bracing and, at times with the movement of the ship especially in the far north, a bit chilly. I was therefore very pleased to have a full range of Rohan clothing to keep the wind and chill at bay, including my Rohan goose down jacket. This is amazing as it folds into its own pocket yet has very high insulation properties.

My target in the 1990s was to complete 50 long-distance walks by the time I was 85. I will be 65 in January when I again go on a winter cruise to Norway for the northern lights and amazing snow scenes. A photographers delight!

For my 49th long-distance walk I am currently walking The Derwent Way in Yorkshire from source to where it joins the River Ouse and will then, for my 50th long-distance walk, will start the Cleveland Circles around the North York Moors, which will be 319 miles, my longest ever long-distance walk! It will be walked over several months.
