My favourite walk

A walk we used to do as kids was in the Cairngorms, up from the ski car park past the Corrie an Lochan, to the summit of Ben Macdui, then down past the shelter stone to finish back at Glenmore Lodge, 6 to 8 hours depending on how you go.

The details
Ben Macdui is the second highest mountain in Britain. Approaching it from Speyside involves crossing the vast and exposed Cairngorm plateau, a rolling arctic wilderness and a popular route but requiring excellent navigation skills.

Just short of the summit is a roofless stone shelter; this was the Sapper’s bothy, built by OS surveyors in the 1840s when they were trying to calculate whether Ben Macdui or Ben Nevis was Britain’s highest peak.
