A previous poll on Rohantime regarding how long you kept your Rohan Clothing told us that most of you hold on to your garments for at least 5 years, and some even longer.
The question we would like your help in answering now, is what do you do with you Rohan Clothing when you decide the time has come to part company with it?
I have an old movi which I bought in 1988 and is still used. I have an old wild vest from the early 1990s which is still going – just. I had a pair of bags flown out to me when I was traveling 20 years ago in New Zealand. They were one of only two trousers I had. These bags disintegrated on me (all the stitching went) when I as on the top of Scar fell Pike in the mid 90′s and had lasted five years as my main pair of trousers.
As i sit writing this im wearing a pair of Winter Bags that i bought in 1989 !! They are a bit rough around the edges, but still keep me warm in the winter… i still have a Movi from around the same time… all the rest of my Rohan gear has been worn to the point of disintegration…. except one shirt which i gave to a girlfriend…
Still have my Classico jacket, size 40, in the colour Stone. Think it is a Mark II version, sans the pocket zips. Circa 1990. But am hanging on to it for the time being. It hasn’t dated in 20 years.
By the time I’ve finished with them they aren’t fit for anyone else. My oldest garments are Superstrider breeches (a bit of a squeeze getting into them now). I also have an Olfio and a Wild Vest from the mid 80′s, still used for gardening: they were replaced by Nimbus pullover and vest (date unknown, maybe 10 years old), but I still prefer the airlight material to the modern ripstop.
I have several pairs of bags, uplanders etc in various states of disintegration, the probably last 7-8 years before they get chucked. My winter bags from circa 1995 have taken a hammering this year, and will be on gardening duty next year.
I agree with all the sentiments published, just bought an Assignment jacket in the Sale. It keeps the tradition going – too many pockets to find your keys! I too think that the Olfio is irreplaceable, but has anyone got a Dust Classico jacket in medium?
Hi Geoff
Great to hear from you. I was delighted when you came into the store last year in your Master Jacket and we agreed a part exchange-hope your happy with your new waterproof. You will be pleased to know your Master Jacket is framed and up on the wall of the shop-and looks superb. Hopefully you will call in when your next in Keswick to view your old jacket
Regards Ben at Rohan Keswick
I was interested in the item on the vintage clothing display at Keswick. In September 1986 I bought, in a factory sale at the Long Preston shop. an orange Goretex jacket which I was told was surplus to an order placed with Rohan by an Iceland Mountain Rescue Team.My purchase served me well as the jacket travelled with me on trips to the Alps, Himalayas, South America, as well as numerous visits to the Lakes & LDWA events.
Last year, after 23 years of excellent service, it started to leak, so I went to the Keswick shop for a replacement jacket. Whilst I was looking at what was on offer I was amazed by an offer to buy my old jacket!I now realise that it will be in the vintage collection.I think that it might be the Master jacket. I shall look forward to seeing my old friend on my next visit to Keswick.
My wife and I have been wearing Rohan since the 70′s. At one time we had over 50 garments between us. Goas are the most used – perfect for golf they never seem to wear out! Since we have lived in Spain we naturally favour the lighter items and have passed on padded jackets ets,. to our less fortunae friends and relations in the U.K. Now in our late 70′s we favour the more traditional styles – mountain scrambling and extended hiking is now I’m afraid too much for us. We would be pleased if you brought back more tradional lines, otherwise, keep up the good work!
I agree with cookie. You have to try hard to wear it out, so why get rid of it? Most of my kit dates from the early eighties and is still in good condition.
I have a really scruffy pair of winter bags around 10 years old. The zips on the two main pockets went on my flight back from skiing last week, making them useless for travel. They will be used for winter gardening until they fall apart to the extent that I am liable for arrest for indecency!
I still have a perfectly good pair of winter globetrotters purchased in London in 1994. They are my favourite pants to wear for our winter 4WD tours and training. The way the are wearing I am not sure if I need to bequest them in my will as I suspect they may outlast me
my partner and i have bags and far to many coats and fleeces to mention going back about 20 years .. most still being worn and still going strong ..we love our rohan clothes .. just sometimes wish the sizing on the ladies was a little more generous !!!
Whenever I think that I would likea new pair of Rohan bags or t-shirts or any other gear, I take the present items to Nepal and give them to the guides or porters together with good wool socks and locally bought fleeces. I think at least two pairs of bags have been to Mustang and Everest base camp at times I was not there.
