Continuing our series of posts following the Rohan Gift Your Gear story…
A Bridge to the Outdoors
A Bridge to the Outdoors describes the venue and activity of The Brede Arkless Outdoors in the City Centre a unique facility offering the thrills, challenges and excitement of the great outdoors in inner city Newham. The centre is the first recipient of Rohan – Gift Your Gear donations.
Brede Arkless is commemorated in the naming of an outdoor activities centre in East London. Brede was a leading female climber and mountaineer, and was actively involved in the all-women’s climbing movement. “The Brede Arkless Outdoors in the City centre” recognises “…the inspirational way in which Brede introduced disadvantaged and often disaffected children and young people safely into the challenges and joy of the mountains”.
Just a stone’s throw from Canary Wharf and a short journey from central London, the centre offers a huge range of outdoor activities: everything from abseiling to zip wires, via archery, bush craft, high ropes, orienteering, climbing wall, and more. A team of qualified instructors cater for every kind of group and individual to deliver a unique experience that is both fun and empowering.
During October Roger Cann MD of Rohan and Sarah Howcroft from ROG & Gift your Gear visited the centre to learn more about the activities and to see first hand the difference the Gift Your Gear donations from Rohan customers would make.
Roger and Sarah met Kevin Jenkins Co-founder of Community Links responsible for setting up the centre and Caroline Oakley instructor at the centre. Caroline talked to Roger about the activities covered at the centre.
Garry Brunsden – A Young Volunteer at Outdoors In The City, he is also a member of the OITC Adventure Club
The day-to-day workings, aims and aspirations of the centre were explained to Roger and Sarah by Garry and instructor Gavin Sutton. Roger and Gavin tried out the climbing tower. I think it is safe to say a good day was had by all.
Over the following days the boxes containing Rohan customer Gift Your Gear donations started arriving at the centre.
Kevin Jenkins Co-Founder/Senior Advisor Community Links Canning Town told Rohantime
“Thank you to everyone concerned with Recycle Outdoor Gear and Rohan for the brilliant donation of outdoor waterproofs, fleeces etc which are truly wonderful.
Everyone’s kindness will help disadvantaged children and young people across east London to have their first experience of the great outdoors properly kitted out and safe. Over 3000 young people will be participating in our various outdoor programmes each year utilising the skills and disciplines learnt through outdoor activities to all aspects of their personal, social and educational development, helping to ensure that their full potential is achieved.
On behalf of the most disadvantaged children and young people across east London.
Many many thanks”
Coming soon on Rohantime photo’s and stories of the big sort at the centre and some very interesting donations found in the boxes…
