No-one really likes wearing waterproof overtrousers. And, to be honest, no-one really even likes carrying them.

But, if you’re out in walking in Britain, you always feel you need to pack   them, just in case.

At least you did – until now.

Our Dry Ascent Trousers look and feel like regular hill-walking trousers. But they’ve got a hidden advantage – they have a waterproof and windproof Barricade™ liner. It’s light, soft, flexible and uses our Active Diffusion™ technology to offer amazing breathability and comfort in a wide range of temperatures.

The outer fabric is a tough, textured polyamide with our Durable Water Repellency™ finish. It offers exactly the sort of performance you’d expect from our outdoor trousers – it’s hard-wearing, high-wicking and quick-drying.

Washing the trousers is simple – just throw them in the machine and hang them out. They’ll dry overnight – and they’ll still be waterproof. They require absolutely no special care whatsoever.

In terms of design, the Dry Ascents are very much aimed at regular walkers and committed trekkers. They feature two hand pockets, a zipped rear pocket and a zipped cargo pocket on the thigh which is accessible when you’re wearing your waterproof jacket. An accessory loop inside one of the hand pockets is designed to secure your car keys, a penknife or a compass.

They also feature a pre-bent construction for improved fit and superb, unrestricted freedom of movement. Basically, if you’re wearing these and you’re struggling to get your leg over a stile, it’s probably your age and not your trousers that are holding you back.

As the TGO review says, the fit is good, the trousers comfortable to wear for long periods and they offer excellent general protection in heavy rain. They have a slightly odd gusset behind the fly which seems to make no difference to weather protection. The main weakness is that in anything other than light rain, the pockets rapidly become damp and then positively wet. This is because they are not waterproof – although the Barricade lining membrane will keep your legs from becoming wet. However, it makes it impossible to keep anything dry in those pockets, which isn’t much use for an all-day rain trouser. In very heavy, constant downpours, you do also gradually accumulate a miniature puddle around your ankles, as the water drains down between the exterior fabric and the liner. The zip on the cargo pocket is also rather large for its purpose and tends to rattle quite annoyingly as you walk. Overall, they are a useful piece of kit but would benefit from some modifications to the design to be really outstanding.
