Rohan gear for gap year girl
My granddaughter is about to leave on a gap year, mainly to the Far East and Asia. I have been a fan of Rohan for many years and have convinced her that Rohan clothing would serve her needs well, but she says she doesn’t want to dress like her Gran. With a budget of £600 she is warming to the idea that Rohan may be suitable. What would be your best recommendations for a skeptical 19 year old female for the trip?

Bought my first pair of Rohan trousers for travel 10 years ago and still wear them! Chose On Route in navy for trip to Vietnam in early December but found them too hot especially when sitting in buses with the sun now I normally travel in a stone pair. Trousers with zip off legs very useful especially in wet and muddy areas as you can wear as capris or just wash the bottom section. Try and choose trousers without built in belts as the dry much quicker
and I would go for tousers without back pockets. Find “leg” pockets much more
useful and secure. Cannot see any point of taking/wearing jeans in Asia – too heavy and take ages to dry. My old black springback trousers have been to many a “posh” occasion when worn with a silk shirt bought overseas and travel perfectly when rolled. Don’t forget lightweight underwear – I prefer cotton so take some that is wearing alittle thin for easy drying. With high humidity it is not always easy to get things dried overnight. You will need a security bum bag or I would go for a shoulder type bag which you can wear across the body. Hope these ideas are useful.
From the Rohantime Forum:
My best recommendation would be to let her choose herself: things that aren’t liked won’t be worn, no matter how brilliant they are on paper. Any direct advice I’d have on appearance for a lass less than half my age would be so likely to be hilariously out of touch that I won’t bother trying! But get her in the shop and let her find something that she thinks is okay and it should be fairly straightforward to sell the practicalities.
Beyond that, base layers make a very big comfort difference and whether they look like Gran’s or not is a bit of a moot point if they’re under something else…
Speaking as a 25 year old I understand your grand daughters reservations about wearing Rohan, but I have now worn it for nearly 5 years in AND out of work and can’t recommend it enough.
Firstly I would advise her to go to her nearest Rohan because each style of top and trouser various in style and fit therefore needs to be tried on.
In the current range I would recomment Ultimate Cargos, a fantasic ultility trouser, lightweight, quick drying and even keeps biting insects off you, they also look good! You can’t go wrong with the T plus range, a good selection of colours in short and long sleeve, and most importantly, they feel like cotton (but are actually polyester and elastane) so look great with a pair of jeans. Lastly, a microgrid is a must for cool evenings, its really warm for its weight and packs down small if space is at a premium.
On top of our clothing range, we stock Eagle Creek, Life Systems and Pacsafe which are always worth a look at, from insect repellant to ingenious packing solutions, there will be something you need or forgotton about….universal sink plug?!
If you can wait until February, a new range for Spring /Summer will begin to make its way into store, so there will be more to choose from for warmer weather travel.
I hope this helps in some way.

You really can’t beat bags as a first pair of Rohan trousers. A few years ago I went to a friend’s wedding in Australia, we arrived at his house in need of a laundry service and loaded his machine with bags, ours, his parents’, his younger brother’s… Everyone had a pair ages from early twenties to mid sixties.
If the budget is tight and you have any time to spare then keep an eye on the Souk for seriously good bargains.
For travel you really can’t beat Eagle Creek luggage.
