Fancy a run? – How about a marathon?
Now pick a route along the Franco-Swiss border with a combined descent equivalent to Scafell Pike and Catbells. Also climbing the height of Ben Nevis with Snowdon parked on top for good measure. Still interested?
Then why not try your hand at the Mont Blanc Marathon, 26 miles of ‘Himalayan flat’ and regarded as one of the toughest courses in the world.
That’s exactly what my future brother-in-law (Gary) and I intend to do come 1st July to raise £2,000 for the British Heart Foundation.
I’m only a recent convert to a run as ‘fun’ rather than necessary exercise, especially distance, and have never EVER considered running a marathon. There was always something about plodding around a city for 4/5 hours which put me off but put it in the great outdoors and throw in a couple of mountains and I’ll give it a bash; plus you can hardly say no when asked by your future brother-in-law…..
We have begun our training and will slowly be building up the distance and time as we go (the cut-off time for Mont Blanc is 9 hours). So far the furthest we’ve run is ten miles on undulating terrain, having the South Downs Way on our doorstep is an ideal tool for training with steep hills and easy navigation. One of our training goals for early next year will be to run the SDW and see how long it takes us, though not in one sitting I’m glad to say. We have also entered several local events in the lead up so look forward to seeing posts on Rohantime with updates including the Winchester 5k Santa run, Eastleigh 10k and Portsmouth Half. Personally I’ve found the exercise circuits which I run through every sunday with the Winchester Stride Fit group have really developed the muscles I use when running (and its free to join).
Keep an eye out on Rohantime for more information on the Mont-Blanc Marathon in future posts.
