Superfine Merino Crew an indispensable bit of kit

Rohan merino top and skirt

My Rohan merino base layer is the single most versatile…

I’m a devoted fan of Rohan products, especially the merino base layer top. I’m a keen walker, and in 2006 walked the Hadrian’s Wall Path national trail. I’d only just discovered Rohan earlier that year, and had purchased a merino base layer top in the summer sale. I thought it expensive, compared with the synthetics I’d seen (and indeed purchased) elsewhere, but figured if it was from Rohan, it must be worth the money. I wore that top (mainly as a jumper over synthetics, but sometimes on its own) every day of the walk (seven days walking, plus one rest day in between), and it NEVER stank. Compare that with the synthetic tops I’d been wearing, well, there is no comparison. Amazing. The Rohan walking trousers I wore were also great: low waist so they were super comfortable, pockets in all the right places, and they dried quickly.

Two years later I walked the West Highland Way, and this time equipped with more merino tops, my trusty Rohan walking trousers, and Rohan waterproof jacket. Not that I needed the several merino tops I had brought because, once again, the Rohan Superfine Merino 150 Crew proved to be the single most versatile, indispensable bit of kit I own. Never have I owned a top which I have worn more frequently, in more places, and always felt comfortable in it. It’s lightweight, squishes down to nothing, and you really can wear it for a week and not need to wash it. Whoever heard of such a miracle top!

Long distance walks are now, sadly, set to the side for the moment whilst I finish my PhD, but I did find time to take part in the 2011 London half marathon SunWalk to raise money for Walk the Walk, a breast cancer charity. What did I wear? My Rohan Chomrong walking shoes. And at the end of the walk (and subsequent three months of training) I had only two blisters. Not bad!

I recently returned from two weeks in Hong Kong (one week for a conference, one week for holiday), and of course my suitcase was stocked with Rohan clothes, including the ridiculously brilliant merino base layer top I have spent the past three hundred words going on about. That top saved my skin from the HK sun (distinctly different to English sun), and kept me warm in the deliciously air conditioned HK malls and restaurants.

I literally cannot think of any article of clothing in my wardrobe that does what the Rohan merino base layer top can do. I still have the original ones I bought back in 2005, a little thinner, a bit holey (thanks, moths), but still going. I will never give them up! Perfect to the very end. Thanks, Rohan, for making such terrific products. I am a customer for life!
