Welcome to Winchester Come to the historic cathedral city of Winchester; capital of the medieval kings of Wessex and England (before being overtaken by a young upstart by the name of London). Situated in the middle of Hampshire, and on the edge of Britains latest national park (The South Downs), it is the ideal place to stay for walking holidays or a spot of historical sight-seeing.
Directions to our shop – Easy rail links from Weymouth, Portsmouth, Southampton and London Waterloo. Just off the A34 and junction 9, 10 and 11 on the M3. The shop is directly opposite the museum and cathedral. From the High Street go down the alleyway by the ButterCross between two pasty shops and take a left into the Square.
Staff Recommendations – If you would like a quick bite to eat then the Earl of Sandwich on Jewry Street make the best snacks and they don’t skimp on fillings either! However, if you fancy something more exotic there is always Sabios in Eastgate street for an authentic Spanish tapas (best outside Spain according to our resident Santiago pilgrim). Or if you would prefer a traditional pub lunch washed down with some local ale there are more pubs than you can shake a stick at; our favourites are the William Walker, just off the Square and the Bishop on the Bridge in Bridge Street.
Local Knowledge – Winchester is packed with historic buildings, monuments and museums all within a short walking distance of each other and just waiting to be explored. If you’re not sure where to begin, take the short climb up St. Giles Hill for a real overview of the city’s fascinating heritage. From the top you can trace the sweep of medieval and Georgian buildings, laid out according to the original Saxon street plan, and steal a birds-eye view of some of the city’s most notable landmarks; from the gothic turrets of the Victorian Guildhall to the perpendicular lines of the cathedral.
For the active walker there are many trails which weave in and out of the city. If you have a couple of hours, have a wander through the Winnal Moors (5 mins from the city centre) for the chance to spot water voles and otters amongst the historic marshes. If you are after more of a challenge, why not try the South Downs way from here to Eastbourne (starting just outside our shop) or the 26 mile Clarendon Way to Salisbury.
Our staff members are keen walkers and between us we have walked every route leading from the city so drop in for a chat or check out our community board for our ‘walk of the fortnight’. Or, if you prefer shopping, Winchester has a plaethora of independant shops and boutiques dotted around the city for everything you could possibly desire… including a brand new Rohan for all your outdoor gear!
Jeff, Matt & Angie, The Rohan Roamers, from Rohan Winchester in June will be walking from Winchester Cathedral to Salisbury Cathedral along the Clarendon Way to raise money for local children’s charity Naomi House – see for more details Rohan Winchester Goes For A Trog!
